The Newington boys are bitterly disappointed after going down in a tight battle with the host team Rangitoto College. As the score line 3-6 suggests the game was an arm wrestle in which both teams defended extremely well. The first quarter was a fast-paced six minutes of water polo where no goals were conceded until Rangitoto found a way through with 17 seconds on the clock. Rangitoto scored a second goal early in the second period to go 0-2 up and it took until 1:51 mins remaining in the half for Newington to find the back of the net, and force the scoreline to 1-2.
Unfortunately we conceded a goal at the end of the second quarter which gave Rangitoto a two goal buffer at half time 1-3.
In the third quarter signs of fatigue began to show and the effects of a long hard preliminary final proved a challenge for Newington. Newington missed a crucial extra man attack late in the third quarter and found themselves 1-4 down at three quarter time.
In the final period four goals were scored, two to each team, which brought the final score to 3-6. Newington were left to reflect on a game of missed opportunities and have the evening to mentally prepare for the Bronze Medal playoff. The boys are determined to leave New Zealand with a medal.
And here is what the finals look like:
