UOI Provocation

Yesterday Year 3 participated in a Provocation for the Unit of Inquiry about the Human Body. They began by completing a SEE/THINK/WONDER with 5 different body parts – brains, kidneys, liver, tongue and bones. This was a way of engaging the boys and provoking thinking and questioning.

Working Collaboratively

Year 3 have been working collaboratively to inquire into a chosen neighbouring country. They created questions using a question grid about the culture of the country. They graphed their questions depending on their worth (desire to know) or their ability to generate deeper understanding. Once they decided upon their questions they needed to ensure the questions related to the central idea. The boys the then created a plan to lead them to success. Once they decided upon who would do what during the inquiry they got to work with researching, collecting information, sorting it and displaying it on our class data wall.

Here are some photos of the boys assessing their participation within their group at the half way point. They will use this pie picture to guide them in their roles for the rest of the inquiry. A great reflective process!

Inquiries into Indigenous Celebrations and Commemorations

This week the boys inquired into Indigenous Celebrations and Commemorations. They learnt about what the celebrations/commemorations are, why they are important to the Indigenous people and what this tells us about their beliefs and values. It was interesting see that the boys discovered they had more questions that they want to go further with and find more about.

Provoking students thoughts based on their beliefs and values

Today Year 3 participated in a provocation where they were given a general statement and they were required to place themselves in a human graph strongly agreeing, agreeing, disagreeing or strongly disagreeing with the statements.

They then discussed the statements to discover their beliefs drive their actions and thoughts. An interesting and engaging process for everyone.

After reflecting on the graphs we created a manifesto based our beliefs.

Problem Solving at Newington

The Year 3 boys worked collaboratively to decide on a problem or improvement they could fix to make our school even better than it already is. They went through a brainstorming process where they had to complete a lightning write to come up with as many ideas a possible. They then shared ideas and worked with their group to cooperatively decide upon a solution. They planned and create a model of their solutions using Simple Machines and Scientific Principles.

Here are some of photos of their creative and innovative inventions!

Well done Year 3!

Maker Space-Simple Machines

“Year 3 have been learning about Simple Machines. We have a scenario/problem and we need to try and fix that problem. We are working in groups and we are designing an invention that involves any of the 6 simple machines. We have created a shopping list to work out the materials for each. I am really enjoying this because we are making and creating.” A year 3 student

Chinese Day

On Tuesday the students in Year 3 participated in a day of celebrations in preparation for the “Moon” Festival commencing on 27th September. They took part in various games in the classroom including: Chinese chess, lantern making, ink writing, origami and tangrams. The highlight of the day i think for most students was being able to watch “The Lion Dance”. An enjoyable day for all involved.

Simple Machines Excursion

Today Stage 2 went on an excursion to the Maritime Museum. We had the opportunity to learn about 6 simple machines and how they make life easier for us. We explored the Museum and the “The Vampire” battle ship where the boys were able to identify and explain how the simple machines worked.

Most importantly we had lots of FUN whilst learning!!!!IMG_0207 IMG_0206 IMG_0203 IMG_0200 IMG_0199 IMG_0198 IMG_0195 IMG_0193 IMG_0187 IMG_0186 IMG_0178
